Peoria Unified travel requests bring scrutiny at the school board dais

But many say such requests fill important need

Out of state travel requests have become a hot topic at recent Peoria Unified school board meetings and took center stage Jan. 26, when new governing board member Heather Rooks requested one such item from the consent agenda be pulled for discussion.

The item asked for approval of about $5,000 to pay for staff to attend in 2023 the National School Public Relations Association National Seminar, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development annual conference and the Glazier Football Clinic.

Rooks and governing board member Rebecca Hill supported a motion to continue discussion to a later date for two of the conferences, but it failed. The board then carried a motion to approve the funds as requested. Hill was the tie-breaker on this vote, 3-1, with Rooks dissenting. Board President David Sandoval was absent.
