Hundreds of people, many dressed in yellow and blue or wearing the Ukrainian Coat of Arms, gathered in Phoenix Sunday to protest a war happening 6,000 miles away.
For many who gathered at Colter Park near Seventh Avenue and Camelback Road, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine Thursday hit close to home.
Melnyk Vladyslav wore a light yellow t-shirt to the demonstration. He’s 17, and still has family in the country. Some, he said, are attempting to flee, while others, like his father have remained in Kyiv to fight.
