Proposed legislation would allow private school students to compete in public school clubs and sports

Republicans in the Arizona Legislature are using their political capital to push legislation that would require public schools to accept private school students on their after-school clubs and athletic teams, and Scottsdale Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Scott Menzel doesn’t think much of it.

Sen. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, is championing Senate Bill 1693 among the same group of legislators that has pushed for school choice programs, including a voucher program that allows tax payer money to pay for students to attend private schools.

“School clubs and sports teams are part of the educational experience and the parents of those students are paying taxes for those schools and their children should benefit from this educational experience,” Kavanagh said.
