Proposed immigration bill gets split support

A controversial Legislative-backed proposition is giving voters the choice to allow local police and judges to enforce federal immigration law — providing a similar law is found constitutional.

Some opponents of Proposition 314 say it would allow state law enforcement to racially profile and wrongfully arrest and prosecute immigrants without seeing an immigration judge.

One challenger — the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project — says the proposed Prop. 314 is similar to Senate Bill 1070 — an anti-immigration law that was challenged as unfairly targeting illegal immigrants in Arizona starting in 2010. Much of that law was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.
