ProMusica Arizona’s 2023-24 season features music depicting an overall theme of “Fantasy, Dreams and Fairytales” at its three annual concerts.

Musical Dreams, Saturday, Oct. 20, and Sunday, Oct, 21, kicks off the 21st season with favorites like “Over the Rainbow”, “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” a rendition of Carly Simon’s “Let the River Run” and a new arrangement of “When You Wish Upon a Star”. The PMAZ Orchestra will be featured playing Mendelssohn’s “Overture to a Midsummer Night’s Dream” and touching settings of “Dreams” by local composer Christine Temple Evans, with text by William B. Yeats. The program closes with choir and orchestra joining in Mary McDonald’s “This is the Dream” inspired by Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Then, on Saturday, Dec. 16, and Sunday, Dec. 17, Winter Fantasy will features a journey through the centuries beginning with new settings of ancient carols “Personent Hodie”, Sussex Carol and Sing We Now of Christmas. The orchestra will be featured in “Toccata on I Saw Three Ships”, “Fantasia on We Three Kings” and the Bells of Christmas. “Christmas Traditions”, a setting of multiple carols for choir, orchestra and audience by local composer Arlin , gives the audience a chance to sing along with beloved Christmas carols. The chorale will be featured in a gorgeous setting of Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria”, and the concert will close with a rousing finale of “Do You Hear What I Hear.”

Fantasy and Fairytales, on Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14, will feature Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasy” with PMAZ vocal soloists and concert pianist Juliana Witt Balinski as piano soloist. They will also include the premiere of “Argonautika Suite” by accomplished musician and composer, Thomas Hartwell who has produced PMAZ video presentations that enhance our concerts for many years. Argonautika Suite is inspired by Jason and the Argonauts and the Greek epic poem Argonautica.  Other fun features will be “Imaginary Creatures” with poems written by elementary school children and set to music by Andrea Ramsey, and other pieces. In addition, the orchestra will play Mozart’s “Overture to the Magic Flute”. The Chorale will be featured on Morten Lauridsen’s “Dirait-on” and “Nella Fantasia” made famous by the vocal sensation “Il Divo” from the film “The Mission.”

Times and venues for each concert include Saturday concerts 3:30 p.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church, 15649 N. 7th St., and Sunday concerts 3:30 p.m. at. American Lutheran Church, 17200 Del Webb Blvd.
