Poverty in Arizona is about to get worse

Posted

The USDA just announced it’s ending its food insecurity survey this year.

This survey documents the struggles facing real families  to put food on the table and is critical to understanding the crisis of hunger and poverty in the U.S. The administration is sending a clear signal it wants to hide poverty rather than address it.

Stopping the survey just as deep cuts to anti-poverty programs take effect cannot be a coincidence.
Recent U.S. Census data shows that anti-poverty programs work. The Child Tax Credit, coupled with the Earned Income Tax Credit, kept 6.8 million people out of poverty last year. SNAP kept 3.6 million people out. Yet the One Big Beautiful Bill Act takes the CTC and SNAP away from millions of families, which I believe will force them into poverty.

Hiding poverty doesn’t end it, but it’s not too late to change course. I urge our members of Congress to immediately repeal the harmful OBBBA cuts and prioritize investments in anti-poverty programs in the FY 2026 budget.
