Potential changes to downtown Phoenix freeways strive for even speeds for safety, traffic

Valley transportation leaders want some drivers to slow down — and others to speed up.

As the Maricopa Association of Governments looks to redesign aspects of the busiest sections of freeway in the state, officials believe speed differential — sudden slowdowns or else vehicles in one lane going much faster than vehicles in the next — is leading to congestion and crashes.

MAG transportation officials have highlighted several issues to address as they craft a plan to redesign sections of interstates 10 and 17, State Route 51 and Loop 202 near downtown Phoenix. They seek to avoid several things that can cause drivers to slam on the breaks:
