Arizona lawmakers OK ban on close-up videotaping of police

Bill heads to Gov. Ducey for signature

PHOENIX - State lawmakers have approved legislation that foes say will make it harder for individuals to police the police.

HB 2319, waiting for action by Gov. Doug Ducey, would make it a crime to make a video recording within 8 feet of any "law enforcement activity.'' A first-time offense would get someone off with a warning; repeat violations could result in the would-be videographer behind bars for 30 days.

The move is a bid by Rep. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, a former police officer, to provide what he believes is a necessary buffer between officers and observers.
