Police report South Mountain hiker died from heat-related or medical event

A 61-year-old man died from a medical or heat-related event on Saturday near a South Mountain trail, police said Sunday.

A cyclist was riding on a trail when he came across the man, Richard Fletcher, who had gone hiking about 5 a.m. July 25.

Fletcher had no signs of trauma and was pronounced dead by Phoenix Fire Department officials after his body was discovered about 12 hours later near Central Avenue and Los Lomitas Drive, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.
