A man who police said was armed with a firearm and had been threatening others died in a Mesa backyard after he was shot Monday night by a Mesa officer, authorities said.
Mesa officers responded about 8:20 p.m. Aug. 31 to an area near Mesa Drive and McKellips Road to check on the man who was threatening others and had displayed a firearm in his waistband. Officers had previously responded to calls for service involving the same man, including similar reports of threats involving a weapon, according to a Mesa Police Department release.
Officers attempted to contact the man who refused to come outside from a residence and speak with them.
