Police K9 units sharpen high-risk deployment skills in intensive training

The dog is a Belgian Malinois, and it is ready to work.

Pet owners who have ever struggled with a dog pulling and straining against its leash can sympathize. The dog, tail wagging madly, is giving its handler all he can handle as they approach a minivan stopped on a road from behind by a police car through the use of a “grappler,” a spring-loaded net that deploys from the police car’s front bumper to ensnare tires.

Suddenly, there is the pop of gun fire and a man in an oversized hoodie scrambles from the minivan and tries to run across the road in front of the van.
