Police investigate after protesters in Tempe pepper-sprayed

The Tempe Police Department says an investigation is underway after a group of protesters was pepper-sprayed on July 3. 

According to a news release from the department, protesters were walking along Mill Avenue and University Drive about 9:30 p.m. when someone in a nearby car deployed what appeared to be pepper spray at the crowd. 

Police officers and members of Tempe Fire Medical Rescue were called to the scene to tend to victims.
