Watts Williams, 25, has been identifed by Mesa police as the man killed this week in an officer-involved shooting at a 7-Eleven.
The shooting occurred Nov. 30 outside the store, 815 S. Dobson Road, Mesa, after police were called about 4:10 a.m. by a store employee who said there was a vehicle parked in the lot with a man inside.
The worker said he did not know if the man was OK and asked for police assistance.
A license plate number for the vehicle was checked, and authorities said it was stolen from Chandler.
Mesa police attempted to contact the man in the car by using sirens and other means.
When that failed to work, officers placed two patrol vehicles behind the suspect’s car.
“At this point the suspect began moving around in the cab and started the vehicle,” police said in a statement.
“The vehicle reversed at a high rate of speed, squealing the tires and hitting the front of one of the patrol vehicles. Two officers that were next to the patrol vehicle tried to back up and this is when the officer involved shooting occurred.”
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured, police said.
Williams also goes by the name Watts Wellington Lee Williams II, police said.
"Detectives are still investigating the incident and combing through all of the evidence.," police said in a release.
