Police arrest Peoria man for murder of his child

Police say they have arrested a Peoria man for the murder of his child.

Peoria Police officers arrested 26-year-old Hein Lwin on suspicion of attempted murder, aggravated assault (domestic violence and strangulation), and child abuse at 6:15 p.m. Oct. 24.

He was taken into custody without incident. Lwin was processed at the Peoria Police Department and later booked into the Maricopa County Jail.

This investigation began on Oct. 24 when Peoria Police responded to a check welfare call for service near 108th and Olive avenues. Lwin had reported his 2-year-old stepchild was choking on a cloth. Peoria officers and Peoria Fire-Medical attempted life-saving measures and took the child to a local hospital. During the investigation, police determined Lwin physically abused the child multiple times, causing serious physical injuries.

The child died Oct. 27. Detectives later amended charges to first-degree murder while Lwin was still in custody.
