A 48-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the shooting death of an 8-year-old girl in what police said was a road rage incident last week in Phoenix.

Sidney Garrand was booked into Maricopa County Jail on Tuesday, Nov. 1, in connection with a shooting that occurred about 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, near 1600 E. Greenway Parkway.

Officers learned that a road rage incident between the occupants of two vehicles occurred in the area of 16th Street and Grovers Avenue, according to authorities.

The driver of one vehicle, identified at the time as a 48-year-old male, followed the other vehicle with three people in it to the area of 16th Street and Greenway Parkway, police said.

The first driver got out of his car and began to fight in the roadway with the driver of the second vehicle who also got out of his car.

During the fight, the second driver, identified as a 28-year-old man, stabbed the other driver and began to drive away with two other people in his car.

The 48-year-old man pulled out a handgun and shot at the vehicle.

The 8-year-old was sitting in the back of the car, and she was hit by a bullet that left her in critical condition, police said. She died from her injuries.

Others suffered non-life threatening injuries.
