Plastic recycling microfactory opens in Phoenix, hopes to spark global trend

Goal is 10 microfactories per region

Phoenix opened its first plastic recycling microfactory Tuesday, a model it hopes will catch on not just in the region but around the globe.

“We have a sense that from Phoenix, this will go throughout the world,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said at an opening ceremony for the microfactory Tuesday.

The microfactory will employ about 10 people and repurpose about 1,000 tons of plastic per year — about 2.7 tons per day — into new plastic products. It is at the Goodwill Retail Operations Center, northeast of 51st Avenue and Van Buren Street in Phoenix.
