New School Year

Thousands of new ASU students connect in 80-year-old tradition

Echo from the Buttes, one of Arizona State University’s oldest move-in events, welcomed crowds of first- and second-year students on Aug. 19, to take part in the classic tradition of reclaiming A Mountain.

This more than 80-year tradition signifies the start of the school year and is a way for incoming students to build camaraderie with their fellow classmates, according to a press release.

From 8 to 10 a.m., ASU students from the class of 2026 and 2027 lined up to climb Hayden Butte and repaint the iconic “A” from white to gold.
