Phoenix will open all its pools for the first time since pandemic

The city of Phoenix will open all of its public swimming pools this summer for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

That is possible in part because the city has reduced its number of swimming pools. Five of the city’s 29 pools are being converted into splash pads, as approved by voters as a part of the 2023 general obligation bond election.

Phoenix will open its other 24 swimming pools this year. That is double the 12 pools the city was able to open in 2021. That total grew slightly each year as the city dealt with lifeguard staffing shortages that were being experienced nationwide.
