The annual Arizona State Poetry Society Conference and Workshop is coming to Phoenix this month.
The event goes from Friday, Jan. 19 through Sunday, Jan. 21 at The Phoenix Center for the Arts (Saturday only) and on Zoom (Friday, Saturday, Sunday).
Speakers include New Mexico Poet Laureate Lauren Camp; Laura Tohe, the second Navajo Nation Poet Laureate; Caleb Raney, a top performance poet in the U.S. for the past two years; and Benjamin “B-Jam” Gardea, who hosts the PHX Poetry Slam who placed in the top performers at the national 2023 Blackberry Peach Slam.
The Arizona State Poetry Society is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization chartered in 1966 to foster poetry throughout the state through education, publication, reading, and a fraternity of poets. In 1966, Mabelle Lyon and Gladys Bagley Schaefer, two women from Sun City, launched the Phoenix Poetry Society.
In 1968, the Phoenix Poetry Society voted to become the Arizona State Poetry Society in order to qualify for membership in the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. The Phoenix Poetry Society was then the first Branch of ASPS.
