Phoenix, U.S. airports short of air traffic controllers

Flying is still safest mode of travel, despite 2025 being the deadliest year since in decades

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is facing an air traffic controller shortage, along with the rest of the U.S.

More than 82% of U.S. airport traffic control towers are understaffed, according to standards set by the industry’s labor union. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport faces a bigger shortage than the national average.

In light of two deadly plane crashes late last month — including the first major commercial plane fatal crash in the U.S. since 2009 — and another early this month, the Federal Aviation Administration says air travel is still statistically the safest mode of travel.
