STARGAZING

Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff experts offer best spots for Milky Way viewing

Sure we’re ‘in’ the Milky Way, but our galaxy’s band of light can be difficult to spot with the naked eye. Here’s where experts from northern, central, and southern Arizona suggest heading during the next new moon.

The Milky Way — our own cosmic neighborhood — is essentially the entire backdrop of everything visible in the night sky, yet it can be difficult to “see.”

Because Earth sits inside the Milky Way’s disk, dust, gas, city lights and atmospheric conditions can obscure our view. Under dark skies, however, the Milky Way becomes dramatically visible as a bright band stretching across the sky.

“The Milky Way arches across the sky … a river of stars,” Carl Sagan once opined in “Cosmos.”
