Phoenix transitions to high-visibility crosswalks, with debate over timeline

Installation could take decades

Phoenix is transitioning all crosswalks on major streets in the city to be high visibility and adding stop bars at all intersections — the only question is how long it will take.

A citizen petition was filed last month and 10 members of the public spoke during a city council meeting, pushing urgency in adding these safety measures that studies say help save pedestrian and bicyclist lives.

City staff recommended a plan to the Phoenix Transportation, Infrastructure and Planning Subcommittee on Wednesday to phase in high-visibility crosswalks on all but two-lane local roads as streets are repaved and add in stop bars — lines that denote where a vehicle must stop at an intersection — only in areas of greatest need.
