Phoenix touts successes in safety focus areas along I-17, says more work to do

Safety plans aim to address crime, homelessness, blight

The city of Phoenix has made strides in addressing crime, homelessness and blight inside safety focus areas near Interstate 17, but there is still work to do.

Multiple city departments gave an update on the safety plans to the Phoenix Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee this month. However, many of the effort’s results will not be known until next year, in part, because efforts have yet to launch or equipment such as police surveillance cameras have yet to be installed.

“I appreciate all that you are doing, but I’m not going to lie, I can’t wait to find out what the update will be in another 6-9 months when you have all the resources that are supposed to be available for these projects,” Subcommittee Chair Ann O’Brien told staff.
