Phoenix touts impact of overnight park patrols, adds body cams for security

City of Phoenix officials touted the impact of overnight patrols in city parks — by third-party security as well as park rangers — that began last year with plans to add body-worn cameras for the third-party security officers.

Phoenix is changing companies that will provide security to city parks overnight to the company that can equip officers with body cams for the cheapest. The city also hopes to fill park ranger vacancies soon and is piloting security cameras in some parks.

City staff updated the Phoenix Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee earlier this month on park security efforts. Last year, the city funded third-party security officers and another shift of park rangers to patrol the city’s parks overnight. Those new patrols started in February and September 2023, respectively.
