Phoenix to spend $1M of COVID-19 funds on free transit passes for some residents

Phoenix is spending $1 million of the latest round of federal COVID-19 relief funds to provide 31,250 free one-month public transit passes for residents in need.

Last week, City Council voted to allow the city to charge itself half price for the transit passes. Without that price cut, the city would have only been able to distribute half as many, about 15,000, free transit passes. The vote passed 9-0.

The transit passes will provide riders with free access to both light rail and buses for a month.
