Phoenix to rename holiday, all city property named for Cesar Chavez

Phoenix Union considering renaming Cesar Chavez High School

The city of Phoenix is renaming all city-owned property named after Cesar Chavez as well as the Cesar Chavez Day holiday after allegations this week that the labor leader sexually abused girls and women.

Phoenix Union High School District also indicated it is considering changing the name of Cesar Chavez High School in Phoenix as well.

A newsletter to city employees sent out Wednesday stated the upcoming March 31 city holiday will proceed as planned but under a new name. The city also plans to initiate the removal of ceremonial street signs for Chavez and begin the process of renaming any city property named after him.
