Phoenix to remove or change three artworks depicting Cesar Chavez

Phoenix City Council voted to remove or modify three pieces of public artwork depicting Cesar Chavez.

Council moved quickly in March to initiate the process of stripping Cesar Chavez’s name from all city property after allegations emerged that the labor leader sexually abused girls and women.

On Wednesday, May 20, council voted 8-0 to spend $20,000 to remove a life-size statue of Chavez and modify a bronze plaque at Cesar Chavez Park (also in the process of being renamed) and to modify a mural depicting Chavez at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Rental Car Center.
