New Phoenix City Councilmember Anna Hernandez promised to be a “fighter” against the Trump administration and state government budget cuts during her inauguration speech Tuesday.
“The residents of District 7 also understand that we are in a pivotal moment in history, and they overwhelmingly chose to send a fighter to City Hall because they know that I will always show up to fight with them,” Hernandez said during her speech on Thursday.
Hernandez, a former state senator, won with 52.7% of the vote in a four-person race in the November election. She takes over the seat filled by interim Councilmember Carlos Galindo-Elvria, who did not run for the new term. He was appointed by council after Yassamin Ansari vacated the seat to run for Congress.
