Phoenix sustainable-housing company turns its sights on homelessness

Steel + Spark made its name turning shipping containers into sustainable housing, starting with “Containers on Grand,” the nation’s second multifamily shipping-container project and one that drew 250 people to a waiting list for eight units.

Since then, the company has been behind using containers for such notable projects as The Oscar apartments, The Churchill gathering space and event venue and MFG Coffee pavilion, all around downtown Phoenix.

Now the company has pivoted into an area that fits with its sustainability mission but is decidedly off brand — non-congregate housing for the homeless.
