Phoenix subcommittee supports another $2.9M in Block Watch spending

Most of money will go toward gating alley segments

The Phoenix Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee on Wednesday approved the spending of an additional $2.9 million from the Neighborhood Block Watch Fund.

The bulk of that spending is transitioning funds for the Gated Alley Program from the general fund to the Neighborhood Block Watch Fund and increasing funding. The program was operating on a one-time expenditure of $3 million to cover the past two years. The new funding, if approved by council, would be $2.25 million annually to address increased demand.

Another $500,000 in one-time spending would pay for a Youth Prevention Pilot program, intended to steer at-risk youth away from crime, violence, substance abuse and dropping out of school.
