Phoenix subcommittee recommends rent relief through 2021 for airport concessions

City Council must approve extension

With flight bookings at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport still at about half what they were in 2019, Phoenix’s transportation subcommittee recommended the city extend reduced rents for airport concessions companies through 2021.

The reduced rent extension will sunset if at any point in 2021 flight bookings at the city-owned airport reach 80% of what they were for that month in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic severely reduced air travel.

The full Phoenix City Council needs to approve the extension before it’s finalized. If rejected, reduced rents for airport concessionaires will stop at the end of 2020. All four City Council members on the Transportation, Infrastructure and Innovation Subcommittee voted for the extension last week, meaning only one more of the remaining five council members would need to approve to push it over the finish line, granted none of the four council members on the subcommittee change their mind before the Council vote, which has not been scheduled.
