Phoenix spends additional $4.5M to convert former Super 8 into affordable housing

Phoenix City Council last week authorized an additional $4.5 million for the renovation of a former Super 8 motel into transitional affordable housing for seniors exiting homelessness.

Phoenix bought the land for $9.1 million and allocated $2.6 million for renovations in April 2023. The additional $4.5 million approved in the Wednesday, April 22 council meeting brings the total project cost to $16.2 million.

The green rectangle on this map highlights the former Super 8 motel, northwest of Interstate 17 and Northern Avenue, which will be converted into affordable housing for seniors exiting homelessness. The building immediately to the north is a similar affordable housing project for seniors, which opened in early 2025, at the site of the former Phoenix Inn.
