Phoenix spends $22M for new Tasers

Department says improved tech will help de-escalation

Phoenix City Council approved $22 million for new Tasers for the police department over objections from some residents who spoke at Thursday’s council meeting.

The Tasers, made by the Scottsdale-based company Axon Enterprise Inc., will replace the department’s current Tasers, which reach the end of their manufacturer recommended five-year lifespan at the end of 2024.

The updated model the city is purchasing, approved by a 9-0 vote from city council on Thursday, will help improve safety when police are confronting noncompliant suspects, department officials said.
