The city of Phoenix will spend $1.5 million to add 19 shade structures for people waiting to cross the street at major intersections and crosswalks throughout the city.
District 5 Councilmember Betty Guardado voiced her disappointment in the selection process to city staff, arguing both that more shade structures should have been in her district and council members should have been made aware of the selected locations ahead of the vote.
David Hondula, director of Phoenix’s Office of Heat Response and Mitigation, mentioned there were some limitations on where structures could be built based on federal funding the program received.
