Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport adds tech to avoid incidents like March's deadly crash in New York

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is purchasing 85 transponders for tarmac vehicles that cross the runway to help avoid accidents like the deadly crash at New York’s La Guardia Airport in March.

“In another state there was a really difficult crash, and many people think additional transponders might have helped everyone see the airfield better and understand it,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said during the May 20 city council meeting.

Council unanimously approved the funding: $510,000 from the Aviation budget to purchase the 85 transponders.
