The city of Phoenix is on the hunt for funding as it prepares to adopt its new Tree and Shade Master Plan, which calls for a $50 million investment toward adding shade over the next five years.
Last week, Phoenix City Council submitted for a grant that would cover a small portion of that funding — $150,000 from the Ford Foundation. City staff has said one goal of establishing a specific tree and shade master plan is to better compete for grants from nonprofits like this and from the federal government.
Council plans to adopt the city’s new Tree and Shade Master Plan — an update of the existing plan created in 2010 — this month. The city also is calling the plan the Shade Phoenix Plan.
