The Phoenix resident who is in possession of Jesse Owens’ four Olympic gold medals is campaigning for Cesar Chavez Park to be renamed after Owens.
Phoenix City Council voted to strip Cesar Chavez’s name from all city property after allegations emerged last month that the labor leader sexually abused girls and women.
Resident Jerry Van Gasse was given Owens’ four gold medals from the 1936 Olympics by Owens’ daughters in 2008 and has since been pushing for the sprinter, long jumper and historic figure to be more commemorated in the Valley.
