Phoenix requires at-home EV charging capability for new homes

The city of Phoenix took a step toward making electric vehicles more of the norm in the metro area.

The new building construction code passed 9-0 by council last week includes an amendment to the International Residential Code that requires all new houses and townhomes be equipped for easy installation of an electric vehicle charger.

“As the EV market grows, more people will consider having EV charging in their home to be a basic necessity akin to other appliances that we enjoy today,” said Will Green, the Arizona representative for the nonprofit Southwest Energy Efficiency Project, during the June 18 meeting.
