Phoenix police Sgt. Vince Lewis said the shooting that killed Summerbell Brown occurred Wednesday night when a man in a pickup truck that had been following a family’s car fired several gunshots after the family pulled into their driveway near 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street.

Two other family members weren’t injured. The pickup drove away and no immediate arrest was made.

Mr. Lewis said the fact that the pickup was closely following the victims’ vehicle might indicate there’d been a traffic dispute. He said there was no immediate indication that the family and the shooter knew each other.

“It’s possible that this was a road rage that started earlier in the area prior to the victim’s family arriving at home,” Mr. Lewis told KTAR.

The father, Dharquintium Brown, 37, told KTVK-TV outside his home Thursday morning that the shooting occurred after he got out of the car to confront the man who was following his car.

Police had said immediately after the shooting that the father also was critically wounded but then said Thursday he was recovering. The man told a KTVK reporter that he wasn’t badly injured.

Police on Thursday released a sketch of the shooter. He is in his 30s or 40s. The suspect vehicle is a white Ford F-150 four-door pickup with dark-colored trim on the bottom.

Anyone with information on the incident can call Silent Witness at 480-948-6377.
