Phoenix Police reduces backlog of rape kits by 91% in last two years

The Phoenix Police Department has reduced its backlog of untested sexual assault kits by 91% during the past two years.

The department went from about 550 untested kits in August 2023 to about 50 in August 2025, according to data Phoenix Police presented to council earlier this month. That only accounts for kits that have yet to enter testing. In total, the department had 290 kits either undergoing testing or awaiting testing as of Aug. 31, according to the city’s website.

Police officials did not mention how many of these tested kits led to arrests during their presentation at the Sept. 9 city council meeting.
