Phoenix police recruitment up, officials hopeful trend will continue

More officers reassigned to patrol

The Phoenix Police Department is encouraged by a recent uptick in hiring, a department official told a Phoenix subcommittee Wednesday, as the department works to get its staffing levels above water.

“We are on a positive trend. We’re seeing numbers that we haven’t seen in well over two years,” Phoenix Executive Assistant Police Chief Michael Kurtenbach told the city’s Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee Wednesday.

City Councilman Jim Waring has asked for monthly staffing updates to the Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee.
