Phoenix Police keeps overnight shift of downtown officers, looks to add more

Phoenix Police’s Downtown Operations Unit now operates an overnight shift four days a week. Assistant Chief Brian Lee called the pilot program that began last summer an “immediate success,” and the department is looking to further expand it.

The third shift for the Downtown Operation Unit operates from 6 p.m. – 4 a.m. Wednesday-Saturday. The shift is staffed with four officers and one sergeant, with two to four additional officers brought in on overtime on Fridays and Saturdays.

Having the overnight shift helped alleviate the need for response from Central City Precinct officers to downtown, Lee said.
