A 46-year-old man has been booked into jail in connection with an officer-involved shooting that occurred May 25 near 2500 East Cactus Road, police said.
Sam Perone was medically discharged from a hospital Monday afternoon and booked for felony aggravated assault on a police officer, according to a release from the Phoenix Police Department.
In an earlier release, police reported that an officer shot a man who attempted to grab his gun from its holster during a fight Sunday following a traffic stop, police said.
The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the incident that occurred about 2:30 p.m. May 25 after a patrol officer conducted a traffic stop, and the driver pulled over near 25th Place and Cactus Road, police said.
“Before the officer could park his patrol car, the man got out of his vehicle and began arguing with the officer. The officer requested the man’s driver’s license and attempted to explain the reason for the stop. The man was not compliant and continued to argue with the officer. The driver escalated his verbal aggression toward the officer and began to physically assault him,” the release stated.
During the fight, a witness stopped to help the officer by trying to pull the man away.
As the fight continued, police said the driver attempted to grab the officer’s gun from its holster. “The officer unholstered his weapon and fired one round striking the man in the lower extremity,” according to the release.
Other officers arrived and applied a tourniquet to the man, and he was taken to the hospital.
The officer also was taken to a hospital for treatment and was released.
