Phoenix police investigate deadly officer-involved shooting

A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Saturday afternoon near 44th Street and McDowell Road, Phoenix police said.

Officers received calls about a fight in the area at around 2 p.m. Dec. 16, according to a release.

A man was stabbed in the fight, and the suspect left the area headed east on McDowell Road, police said.

Officers contacted the suspect near 49th Street and McDowell Road and saw he was “holding an object in his hand,” the release stated.

“When officers gave him commands, the man yelled back at officers and continued to walk away weaving in and out of oncoming traffic. One officer used a PepperBall launcher to get the man to stop.”

The man continued to walk away east on McDowell Road toward a strip mall parking lot with the object still in his hand, police said.

“An officer discharged his gun hitting the suspect,” the release stated.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The victim of the initial stabbing received serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a hospital, police said.

Detectives took over the investigation.
