Phoenix police investigate after city bus hits, kills pedestrian

Posted

A man is dead after being struck by a Phoenix city bus, and police detectives are investigating.

The unidentified pedestrian died about 11:45 p.m. July 22 at the scene near Central Avenue and Van Buren Street, police said Tuesday.

Preliminary information suggests the bus was heading west on Van Buren Street and making a right turn onto Central Avenue when the pedestrian attempted to get the bus to stop, according to a  release.

The man was banging on the door and walking next to the bus. The bus driver did not stop due to the area not being designated as a bus stop.

The pedestrian lost his footing and fell into the roadway after which he was struck by the bus, the release stated.

Additional details about the collision remain part of the ongoing investigation, police said.
