A 27-year-old man was shot and killed Wednesday morning by a Phoenix police officer as the suspect in a convenience store shoplifting fled the scene.
Christopher Raymond Tavares was identified Thursday as the man killed early Wednesday morning May 8, police said.
At about 11:45 p.m. May 7, an officer on routine patrol contacted an employee of a convenience store near 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street about a shoplifting, and the two suspects were pointed out nearby.
The officer attempted to contact the suspects at which time one began to run south on 35th Avenue while the other ran east on Roosevelt Street. The officer followed the man running east, and as he got closer, the suspect fired a handgun at the officer, striking the police Tahoe multiple times, police stated in a release.
The officer returned fire, striking the man at least once, police said. The suspect was taken to a hospital, but he did not survive.
The second person involved in the shoplifting remained outstanding Wednesday morning.
