Phoenix plans to transition most crosswalks to high-visibility within 7 years

A citizen petition pushed the city of Phoenix to transition all crosswalks on non-residential roads in the city to high-visibility crosswalks within five years. Instead, a compromise was struck to transition 78% of crosswalks, targeting locations with the most benefit, within seven years.

“I think it gives us the best balance of urgency, equity and fiscal responsibility,” City Councilmember Kesha Hodge Washington said during Wednesday’s Transportation, Infrastructure and Planning Subcommittee meeting.

The subcommittee approved the plan unanimously. It will still need final approval from the full council.
