Phoenix plans to expand apprenticeship programs with private employers

Phoenix officials feel the city had a successful trial run partnering with private employers on apprenticeship programs. The city now plans to make that partnership a permanent endeavor and expand its reach.

While the city has long had apprenticeship programs to train workers for its own job openings, January 2024 was the first time it partnered with private employers on apprenticeships to help fill holes in the local workforce.

“These have helped us address a lot of the changing needs in our workforce community and our business needs to train up our workforce,” Eric Johnson, the city's assistant economic development director, told a Phoenix subcommittee on Wednesday.
