Phoenix City Council wants to spend $5 million on assisting Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport workers with child care costs, eventually creating a child care facility for workers’ children at the city-owned airport. Council’s hope is that it will help workers in need of child care return to the workforce.
The city hopes to add a child care facility at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport at a building next to Terminal 3. In the meantime, the city is paying to give vouchers to workers that will cover a part of their child care costs.
During last week’s meeting, Council approves $4 million to be spent on the voucher program. The building earmarked for the child care facility is the 12,000-square foot Aviation Annex at 3420 E. Sky Harbor Blvd., just north of Terminal 3. The city has contracted an engineering service to assess the building and determine if it is up to state requirements for a child care facility. Council approved $1 million Tuesday, Sept. 21 for upgrades to transform the building into a child care facility, on the condition of it passing the assessment.
