The Phoenix Police Department is investigating the death of 58-year-old man who died last week while in the agency’s custody.

Benjamin Austin was arrested Nov. 29, brought to Phoenix police headquarters at 620 W. Washington St. and put in an interview room for questioning, according to a release.

About 30 minutes later police said Austin “suffered a medical episode while in the interview room.

“Detectives administered medical aid while the Phoenix Fire Department responded to evaluate Austin’s condition. Austin was transported to the hospital by the fire department.”

Austin died Nov. 30 while at the hospital. Detectives took over the death investigation, police said.

“As part of our transparency protocol a critical incident briefing video will be released within 14 days,” the release stated.
